Giveaway - Crafted Applique, New Possibilities by Lara Buccella

We have a giveaway today!  Full disclosure, Lara is a friend of mine on blogland who has written a new book about a making no fray applique - you don't have to needle turn!  Fusible paper can give you frayed edges but Lara's method gives a really neat finish and its washable!
Last year I did a mug rug swap with Lara and she made me this amazing mini of my two dogs Charly and Wilbur!
The detailing is amazing and the little bits of fabric she used to get Wilbur's colouring and Charly's scarf is brilliant!  This lives above my sewing machine in the kitchen and I get to look at it every day!
I used Lara's method when I was making a glow in the dark mini quilt of Darth Vader for a May the 4th be with you swap on Instagram. It made the tiny cuts possible on the face and breastplate to give expression and detail to my Lego inspired mini quilt!

The things you can do with this method really are endless.  There is a blog hop going on at the moment - check this post our from Judy @ Quilt Paradigm to see what you can do with fussy cutting printed fabric and using Lara's technique to layer up some fabulous prints to create a whole new collage.

I have a copy of the book to giveaway here and tomorrow, Tuesday, will be giving away another copy on my blog so you can visit for 2 chances to win if you like!

Please leave me a message below telling me what applique project you would next like to make.  Random number generator will choose on Wednesday morning and a free copy of  Crafted Applique -New Possibilities will be posted out to the winner by Friday.

Just a quick update for things to put in your diary!

There's lots going on this summer for quilters and we're kicking off the 1st June with our Rainbow Rose Quilt-A-Long.  We have some very generous sponsors who have donated prizes for each of the 6 blog posts that will cover how to make the Rainbow Rose block in 2 sizes - Baby and Bed Quilt - using 5" charm squares and 10" layer cake squares.  We do hope you will play along with us and explore the colour wheel by making this block based on the Dutch Rose aka Swoon!

Summer swap!
Our summer swap will be open for sign ups on the 17th June.  This year we are being looked after by Aideen and Cindy who have chosen a fun quick project that shouldn't take up too much summer time soaking in the Irish sun (yes I am an optimist!)  We will have 10 weeks to make a small swap project that should only take an hour.  I hope I haven't spoiled the surprise but no excuses for not joining in on this one is all I'm saying!  Stay tuned for sign ups next month.

Other things going on over the summer and into the Autumn are:

National Quilting Week runs from 1st to the 7th June includes two exhibition on Spike Island -see the Facebook page for details.

River of Dreams Quilt Exhibition takes place in Limerick School of Art and Design, Clare Street runs from Friday 24th June to Friday 1st of July.  Entry closes on the 10th June and Tomomi is entering her Modern Quilters Ireland Bee quilt from last year so I am looking forward to seeing it!

Silver Threads. Octagon Quilters 25th Anniversary Exhibition. Customs House Gallery, The Quay, Westport. Co. Mayo. 1-24th July

Quilt-A-Long : The Rainbow Rose block

Anyone up for a Quilt-A-Long?
I've made this block twice now - I'm calling it the Rainbow Rose block (based on the Dutch Rose block aka the Swoon block!)  I made a 24" version for a Schnitzel & Boo mini quilt swap and had it standing on point. This year I made a 16" version as a starter block for our Round Robin but lately I've been thinking of making a giant block version as a lap quilt. Plus I have two baby quilts to make this might be a fun present for a family with a newborn!

National Quilting week on the 1st June seems as good a time as any to start it. Anyone want to join me?

The Quilt-A-Long will guide you through 2 sizes of quilts:
  • A baby quilt using 5" squares so perfect for those Charm Squares you may have been collecting.
  • A larger lap quilt using 10" squares so perfect for Layer Cakes!

We'll have fun exploring some colour theory and building a colour wheel.

The schedule is:
June 1st: Fabric Selection & Cutting
June 8th: Piecing the middles
June 15th: Piecing the corners
June 22nd: Piecing the centre star
June 29th: Assembly
July 20th: Link up party for assembled and completed quilts

If anyone is interested in sponsoring a prize please drop me a line!

For more on the Dutch Rose block see this earlier post.

I hope you will quilt along with me on June 1st!

Modern Irish Bee Link up

It's that time again when we get to share progress on our Modern Round Robin Bee!  Our Bee is being generously sponsored by Fluffy Sheep Quilting and to be in with a chance to win this month's €20 voucher  please link up your progress on the Bee and any medallion quilts you might be working on!

We hit a bit of a bottleneck this month as our intrepid traveller Cynthia returned home and blitzed 3 blocks super fast.  Thank you for such happy post this month!
I received these two lovely quilts in progress along with Cynthia's starting block.
I sketched out a few ideas and finally settled on growing them very minimally with arrows and corners in as close a grey I had on hand.
The second block got a bit of an extension treatment and the half square triangles became flying geese.  Nothing too dramatic!
So that's been my progess this month - still brainstroming what to add to Cynthia's amazing circle block.  I've turned to Sherri Lynn Wood's Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters for inspiration.
It's helping!  I think I have an idea of where to go now and need to have a fabric rummage to see what colours I can come up with!

How about you guys - what progress have you made this month?  Please join up with the linky party and random number generator will pick a winner next week for our very generous prize from Fluffy Sheep Quilting!
